Horseshoe Bend, Page Arizona – 30” X 24”
Recently, I read a passage in a book by author, Jodi Picoult that resonated in my heart: “Art is not what you see. It’s what you remember.” How true this statement seems to me. In my paintings, I try to capture a “feeling” ….. a memory.
I have become enamored with this part of the U.S. The Southwest is full of majestic earthly wonders. This location, is only several miles away from my recent Antelope Canyon painting location.
It is called Horseshoe Bend for obvious reasons. The Colorado River meanders through the canyon as it continues it’s journey through the ages carving through the rocks. Apparently, it is also called the “east rim of the Grand Canyon.” Lake Powell is also near by; stark in it’s own liquid beauty.
Because of the shadows cast at the time I visited this site, the central focal point resembles an ugly face; One with a kind, watchful eye, assuring that all is the way it should be in time.
My thought is that the “face” resembles “Jabba the Hutt” in Star Wars movies. My friend likened it to a catfish face or a spawning salmon’s face.
Looking closely at the water in the foreground, you can see small dots. They represent the pleasure craft boats. Looking over this rim to the water below, I was astounded to realize how far away and small the boats were. They appear larger than actuality in this painting because if I made them any smaller, one would not be able to see them. This is a grand and awesome location in Arizona.
